The Saint Lucia Co-operative Credit Union League Ltd. (SLUCCULL), in partnership with Volleyball Saint Lucia, has launched Project SPIKE, a special community initiative designed to introduce volleyball to students at special needs schools across Saint Lucia.

The programme represents a shared commitment to creating meaningful opportunities for children and young people with diverse abilities. Through sport, Project SPIKE seeks to promote inclusion, encourage active participation and support the physical, social and emotional development of students in a safe, welcoming and supportive environment.

Project SPIKE stands for Support, Play, Inclusion, Knowledge and Empowerment. Each element reflects the core purpose of the initiative. The programme provides support by ensuring that students receive guidance, encouragement and access to the resources needed to participate. It promotes play as an enjoyable and effective way to learn, develop confidence and build relationships. It advances inclusion by ensuring that students with special educational needs are given opportunities to participate in organised sporting activities alongside their peers. It builds knowledge through instruction in volleyball skills, teamwork and healthy living. Most importantly, it seeks to empower students by helping them recognise their abilities, express themselves and take pride in their achievements.

The initiative currently serves students at the following schools:

  • SOUFRIERE SPECIAL EDUCATION CENTRE
  • VIEUX FORT SPECIAL NEEDS SCHOOL
  • LADY GORDON OPPORTUNITY CENTRE

These schools play an important role in supporting students with different learning needs and abilities, and Project SPIKE adds another dimension to that support by using volleyball as a tool for development, engagement and connection.

As part of the programme, weekly sessions are held every Tuesday. Trained volleyball coaches work directly with students, introducing them to the fundamentals of the sport in a manner that is adapted to their individual needs and abilities. The sessions include basic volleyball skills, movement activities, coordination exercises, ball-handling techniques and simple games designed to encourage participation and enjoyment.

The coaching sessions also place strong emphasis on teamwork, communication and cooperation. Students are encouraged to work with one another, follow instructions, take turns and celebrate both individual and group accomplishments. These activities help to develop important life skills while allowing students to experience the excitement and satisfaction that come from learning something new.

The programme is structured to ensure that students can participate at their own pace. Coaches create an environment in which every student is encouraged to contribute, regardless of their level of experience or physical ability. The focus is not solely on competition or performance, but on participation, progress and personal achievement.

All equipment required for the sessions is provided by SLUCCULL and Volleyball Saint Lucia. This includes the materials and resources needed to conduct the activities safely and effectively. By providing the equipment, the partners help to remove barriers to participation and ensure that students have access to the tools and guidance necessary to engage fully in the programme.

The partnership between SLUCCULL and Volleyball Saint Lucia reflects the value of collaboration in addressing community needs. Volleyball Saint Lucia contributes technical expertise, coaching support and knowledge of the sport, while SLUCCULL provides support for the programme and reinforces its commitment to initiatives that positively impact communities across the island.

Project SPIKE is about much more than teaching students how to play volleyball. It is about creating spaces where children feel welcomed, valued and encouraged. It is about recognising that every student has strengths, talents and potential, and ensuring that those qualities are given room to develop.

Participation in sport can contribute to improved physical fitness, coordination, balance and motor skills. It can also help students develop confidence, discipline, concentration and resilience. Through regular involvement in the sessions, students are given opportunities to practise new skills, overcome challenges and experience the rewards of persistence.

The programme also supports social development. Volleyball activities encourage students to interact with coaches and classmates, communicate with others and work towards shared goals. These experiences can help strengthen relationships, promote cooperation and build a greater sense of belonging within the school community.

For teachers and school administrators, Project SPIKE provides an additional avenue through which students can be engaged and supported. The sessions complement the work already being done by the participating schools and contribute to a more holistic approach to student development. By combining education, physical activity and social interaction, the programme supports the overall well-being of the students involved.

The initiative further demonstrates the importance of making community programmes accessible to persons with disabilities and special educational needs. Inclusion requires more than simply providing access; it involves creating environments in which individuals are actively welcomed, supported and encouraged to participate. Project SPIKE seeks to put this principle into practice through consistent engagement, adapted instruction and positive reinforcement.

For SLUCCULL, the programme is also an expression of the Co-operative principle of concern for community. Credit unions and co-operative organisations have a long-standing responsibility to contribute to the social and economic well-being of the communities they serve. By supporting Project SPIKE, SLUCCULL is investing in the development of young people and helping to create opportunities that extend beyond the classroom.

The initiative reflects SLUCCULL’s belief that community development includes supporting education, health, inclusion, youth development and personal empowerment. It also highlights the League’s commitment to working with national organisations and community partners to address important needs and create lasting positive impact.

Volleyball Saint Lucia’s involvement reinforces the role that sport can play in building stronger and more inclusive communities. Through Project SPIKE, volleyball is being used not only as a recreational activity, but also as a means of teaching cooperation, encouraging confidence and helping students discover the joy of movement and participation.

As the programme continues, the partners hope to strengthen the existing sessions and explore opportunities to reach more students and schools. The long-term vision is to build on the foundation already established and ensure that more children with special educational needs can benefit from structured sporting activities, professional coaching and inclusive community support.

Project SPIKE also has the potential to inspire broader conversations about accessibility and participation in sport. By demonstrating that volleyball can be adapted to meet the needs of different learners, the programme encourages schools, sporting organisations, families and community groups to consider how they can create more inclusive opportunities.

The launch of Project SPIKE marks an important step in the ongoing effort to ensure that every child has the opportunity to participate, learn and grow. It sends a clear message that sport should be accessible to all and that every student deserves the chance to experience the benefits of teamwork, movement, encouragement and achievement.

Through the partnership, SLUCCULL and Volleyball Saint Lucia are helping students to develop skills, build confidence and enjoy positive experiences in a supportive setting. The programme celebrates ability, encourages participation and reinforces the belief that inclusion strengthens communities.

Project SPIKE is ultimately about empowering students to see themselves as capable participants and valued members of their schools and communities. Through Support, Play, Inclusion, Knowledge and Empowerment, the initiative is helping to create opportunities for students to discover their potential and take part in an activity that promotes health, friendship and personal growth.

With its focus on inclusion, development and community partnership, Project SPIKE represents a meaningful investment in the future of Saint Lucia’s young people. Through this initiative, SLUCCULL and Volleyball Saint Lucia continue to demonstrate that sport can be a powerful vehicle for education, empowerment and positive social change.
