The Saint Lucia Co-operative Credit Union League Ltd. is proud to partner with the Ministry of Youth Development and Sports in support of the Youth Service Corps Programme, an initiative designed to provide young people with meaningful opportunities for professional development, practical experience and personal growth.
Through this important collaboration, eight interns have been placed at various Credit Unions across Saint Lucia, including Choiseul Credit Union, Farmers Credit Union, Hospitality Credit Union, Laborie Credit Union, Saltibus Credit Union and the Saint Lucia Co-operative Credit Union League Ltd. Each intern will participate in a one-year placement, gaining valuable exposure to the operations, services and values that guide the Credit Union Sector.
The internship programme provides participants with an opportunity to transition from the classroom or other learning environments into the world of work. During their placement, the interns will be introduced to the daily responsibilities and professional standards associated with working in a financial services environment. They will have the opportunity to develop practical skills, strengthen their communication abilities and gain a deeper understanding of customer service, teamwork, administration and community-based financial development.
Throughout the one-year internship, the participants will receive structured guidance, mentorship and professional support from staff members at their assigned Credit Unions and at the League. This support is intended to help them build confidence, improve their workplace readiness and develop the discipline and adaptability required to succeed in a professional setting.
The placements also provide the interns with an opportunity to learn about the important role Credit Unions play in the lives of individuals, families, businesses and communities across Saint Lucia. As member-owned financial institutions, Credit Unions are committed not only to providing financial services, but also to promoting financial inclusion, encouraging savings, supporting responsible borrowing and contributing to the social and economic development of their members.
By being placed within this environment, the interns will gain insight into the values of cooperation, service, accountability and community responsibility. They will also be able to observe how Credit Unions work to meet the needs of their members while contributing to the broader development of the communities they serve.
The programme is expected to provide benefits for both the interns and the participating Credit Unions. For the interns, it offers an opportunity to gain relevant work experience, identify areas of interest, develop professional networks and prepare for future employment or further education. For the Credit Unions, the programme creates an opportunity to support young people, share institutional knowledge and contribute to the development of a skilled and motivated workforce.
